An overabundance of a tiny critter leads to a huge problem.

Australia has been plagued by mice
(specifically, in New South Wales).
The numbers, although imprecise,
are staggering in the details.

The winter crops are being threatened
by these scurvy little rodents.
Farmers, much to their regret, spend
great cost fighting these opponents.

A single mouse – an individual –
most folks would consider cute.
But damage left behind, residual,
caused by swarms is absolute.

Farmers have been made distraught;
it’s overwhelming, causing strife.
A losing battle – if it’s fought
by one knife-wielding farmer’s wife.
